Living Well with Diabetes: Free Seminar, Saturday 21st April, 2pm-5pm

Touchstone Diabetes Awareness event with Operation Transformation’s Karl Henry will show that life with Diabetes can still be sweet

Touchstone Practice Diabetes is holding a free seminar and exhibition on “Living Well with Diabetes” at their Primary Care Centre in Blackrock, Cork (near Mahon Point) on the afternoon of Saturday 21 April from 2pm-5pm. Specialist Touchstone diabetes nurse Helena Farrell and fitness training guru Karl Henry, famous for his role on the Operation Transformation, will give talks on the day and one-to-one advice to those in attendance.

The seminar is free but booking is required, and is a must for anyone who is interested in learning more about diabetes; a lifelong condition which currently affects approximately 180,000 Irish people in Ireland.  The event will provide insights into a wide range of topics aimed at improving the ability of those affected to live well.

Touchstone’s specialist diabetes nurse Helena Farrell will begin with an outline of the lesser known aspects of diabetes, the things that people do not know or necessarily associate with having the condition. The afternoon will continue with practical information on dietarymanagement covering everything from a low GI diet to carb counting, shopping lists, food labelling and portion size. It will then move onto health management topics including your diabetes checklist, what’s new in diabetes interms of equipment, developments, products, services and research.

Helena will also delve in to diabetes mentoring covering issues such as coaching, motivating change, peer support and cognitive behavioural therapy.

Between 3pm and 3.30pm there will be light refreshments and an opportunity to view an assortment of relevant exhibits before Personal Trainer Karl Henry commences his section of seminar,which will focus on fitness strategies, the benefits of being active for reducing diabetes risk and how to stay fit and healthy for longer. Karl will then share his tools for creating a programme for Lifestyle Change and Management of Diabetes (type 1& type 2).

Touchstone Practice Diabetes at Blackrock Hall Primary Care Centre is a specialist nurse led practice that advocates education and holistic support for a person with diabetes, and is part of the Touchstone Primary Care, the largest primary healthcare team in Ireland.
