Its coming up to that time of the year again, November being dedicated to raising the profile of diabetes across the world. World Diabetes Day is celebrated on the 14th November which is the birthday of Frederick Banting, one of the founding fathers of insulin. So Diabetes Insight is doing its bit to raise awareness on the day for diabetes by holding free diabetes screening and an information day in its pharmacy.
It will give people an opportunity to come face to face with a diabetes specialist nurse(that would be me!), to get information on not only Type 2 Diabetes but Type 1 Diabetes and the services that we have to assist you such as podiatry, eye screening and a dietitian. For anyone who has Type 2 Diabetes, it is an ideal day to bring along your relatives to be screened, as having a first degree relative such as a parent, sibling or children increases your risk by up to 50% for developing Type 2 Diabetes. Other risk factors for developing Type 2 Diabetes are as follows:
- Asian/African origin
- History of high blood pressure & cholesterol
- Diabetes in pregnancy (gestational diabetes)
- Over the age of 40 years
- Family History
Screening involves a simple pin prick from your finger and a result is given in 5 seconds, along with a risk factor assessment and lifestyle advice, so the whole process only takes a few minutes. So for anyone planning to get in some early Christmas shopping in Mahon Point Shopping Centre, we are less than a five minute drive or ten minute walk from the centre, you can get in some exercise as well!! We will have free refreshments and healthy snacks available for all who attend.
