The Shock of Diagnosis
If you have just been told that your child has Type 1 Diabetes, it comes as a complete shock and brings with it a suite of emotions such as devastation, anger, depression, sadness and anxiety/fear for the future. While these feelings may not feel normal, there is nothing abnormal about feeling them post diagnosis.
For many parents when their child is diagnosed with diabetes, will go through the 5 stages of grieving: anger, denial, bargaining, depression and acceptance. You are ‘grieving’ for a loss of your child’s health. Your child with Type 1 Diabetes will experience these also, as well as other family members and friends. This can be a challenging time, as everyone will feel something different, in different ways, at different times. This can cause conflict, and add to the isolation and loneliness a child with Type 1 Diabetes and their parents can feel, not just at diagnosis, but at any time where the diabetes brings about change, obstacles or interfering in routine. The reality of living with Type 1 Diabetes must be faced during these times and that can be daunting.
A diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes at any time of life can be completely overwhelming. There is a wealth of information to take in and absorb. What seems overwhelming at the time of diagnosis, will over time become routine. There are lots of questions to be asked and answers to be sought.
It takes at least 18 months for a family to come to terms with a diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes. Give yourself this time, for many it may take more time, for some it takes less. There are no rules when it comes to dealing with the psychological /emotional aspects of living with diabetes.
It might seem a bit strange, a bit insulting, even a bit patronizing to say there has never been a better time to live with diabetes no matter the type, when you are just dealing with a diagnosis. But there is hope. The impact of science and technology for those living with Type 1 Diabetes over the last 10-20 years has been phenomenal, with artificial pancreas now a reality, rather than a dream. The changes to blood glucose monitors, insulin pumps, insulin therapies and continuous blood glucose monitors has been life changing for those who have been living with Type 1 Diabetes for years.
Social Media and online forums have made it easier for parents and people with Type 1 Diabetes to reach out to others for support.
While all these advances cannot take away the reality of living day to day with Type 1 Diabetes, they have made life that little bit easier.
What We Can Help You at Diabetes Insight?
Diabetes Insight blends a variety of practices and therapies within its session to make sure that when someone attends our practice, they are looked at first and foremost as a person, and we look at the whole picture, not just the diabetes. A child’s environment and social factors such as school, friends, sports etc can all have a significant bearing on how the diabetes is managed. We provide a service to schools, please click here for further information.
We See & Hear Your Child at Diabetes Insight, Not Just the Numbers
We blend nursing, science, coaching, psychotherapy, nutrition and fitness into all our sessions. We are the ONLY practice in Ireland that amalgamates all these approaches into the one consultation.
Consultations are taken in a relaxed, informal manner. There is no queues, no waiting times. We give you space and time to discuss your needs without interruption.
There are no uniforms, the whole practice is ‘demedicalised’ to provide a calming atmosphere, as this creates an environment of trust, openness and honesty. We try to create an experience at Diabetes Insight that will take the fear and anxiety out of diabetes and attending health care professionals especially for children.
You are not just listened to at Diabetes Insight, you are heard
It is important for us to ensure both you and your child get the most out of these sessions, so it is important for us to get feedback both prior and post sessions. You are in complete control, you dictate what you want from the sessions, for both yourself and your child.
We provide up to date information on the latest blood glucose monitoring equipment and have many in stock, apps, new technology etc.
HbA1c testing is also available on site. It is encouraged that a child will use their own lancing device to pick their finger, to reduce unnecessary anxiety. A non-fasting sample is taken, and a result is available within 6 minutes. To have immediate access to HbA1c testing within our consultations has been proven to be the most appreciated aspect of our service, providing reassurance and motivation.
All our consultations are facilitated by the founder of Diabetes Insight, Helena Farrell, RGN, MSc Diabetes. To read more about Helena please click here
