Our Cooking Well for Diabetes Courses has been running for over 2 years. What started off as a pilot project for Diabetes Insight has now become one of our most successful ventures to date.

The Principle of Cooking Well for Diabeteshummus

Cooking Well for Type 1 Diabetes is a cookery course based on cooking using the principles of the low glycaemic index diet. The Low GI Diet is using foods that are slow releasing, high in fibre, that take along time to burn through your body. Therefore they lessen or eliminate the spike with blood sugar levels that comes two hours after eating when you have diabetes, and help you manage and control your diabetes much more effectively. By lowering this spike, you can reduce lower Hba1c level and dramatically lower your risk or prevent long term complications with diabetes.

Other ways the Low GI approach can help you is by reducing your cholesterol, blood pressure and even weight, making it a great all rounder diet for people with diabetes who need to protect their cardiovascular health

Cooking Well for Diabetes can be incorporated and integrated into a family way of eating, creating a healthy, balanced approach which all the family can enjoy.It protects your family’s health for the future and does not isolate any particular member of the family by being on a ‘special diet’.

Simplicity is key to all that we do at Diabetes Insight, so all ingredients used on the course can be found in local supermarkets and within a family’s budget.

For people with Type 1 Diabetes, the Low GI Diet is the foundation stone before carbohydrate counting and insulin to carb ratios. There is substantial research to suggest that the Low GI Diet is as beneficial to people with Type 1 Diabetes, as it is Type 2 Diabetes.

All our courses follow a similar schedule, beginning with breakfast, lunch & snacks, dinner and deserts.

Courses can be held over one day or two consecutive weekends depending on demand.

Carbohydrate counts and insulin to carb ratios are covered within the course and with recipes

All courses include recipe booklet, a copy of the Low GI Diet Book, workbook, shopping lists and meal plans.

All courses are facilitated by Helena Farrell, RGN, Msc Diabetes, Founder of Diabetes Insight.

Tasters and Demos included in all courses

Additional services such as Hba1c testing, blood glucose monitoring equipment is available by request.
