There is absolutely no doubt and all the evidence points, that those who prepare for success will achieve their goals. Those who don’t are destined to fail. But there is a system to goal setting, motivating yourself and maintaining your success which must be planned. People tend to skip over this part, they don’t think it applies to them, but for every success we have had at Diabetes Insight, the following process has been key.
People tend to think goal setting is just for weight loss, but it can be applied to any aspect of your diabetes management. Regulating blood glucose levels, reducing HbA1c, cholesterol, blood pressure, remembering to take injections, medications….goal setting applies to all.

Advantages & Disadvantages of Your Goal
It can be a very powerful exercise to take the time to sit down and list out the advantages and disadvantages to you of achieving your goal. Put them up somewhere visible so that when your motivation is waning, these should give you concrete reasons as to why you should keep going. Make post it notes and put them on the mirror when brushing your teeth in the morning, on the inside of your lunch box, the car etc

There is always going to be obstacles, but to have adequately prepared in advance for the possibility of potential obstacles means you will stay on track and not fall off the wagon. If you do, it will be easier to brush yourself down and get on with it again, but don’t bury your mistakes, learn from them, so as to avoid them for the future. Use the sheet below for just one obstacles, print out several copies if you identify a number of obstacles.

You must have something to look forward to, there has to be a short term benefit to all of your hard work. So reward yourself weekly, monthly etc until you achieve your goal. These rewards can be anything you like, but if your goal is to lose weight, it is not such a good idea to reward yourself with food, otherwise you may lose sight of your long term goal and undo some of your hard work.
