Practical Skills in the Management of People with Diabetes

This one day course aims at providing nurses with the understanding, knowledge and confidence in delivering care to individuals with diabetes. This course offers nurses a practical approach to diabetes, whether based in a community or hospital setting. The programme covers many theoretical aspects to diabetes, such as an explanation of the different types of diabetes, national & international guidelines, best practice, how to offer lifestyle advice to patients, as well as interactive workshops spread throughout the day focused on blood glucose monitoring and injection technique.  Topics also covered will be the treatment options in diabetes, understanding blood results as well as dealing with the complications of diabetes

Medication Management in Diabetes

This study day centers on two workshops, one focused on medication management in type 2 diabetes and the other on type 1 diabetes. Both workshops will look at the principles of safe and effective medicines management within clinical practice, as well as building on participants’ previous knowledge and understanding of pharmacology. Other issues that will be covered on the day are the evidence base for medication management in diabetes, legal and professional frameworks, accountability, patient-centered care, self-management and concurrence.

Diabetes in the Older Person

This workshop is aimed at general nurses with background knowledge of diabetes who work in a care of the elderly setting whether it be in a nursing home, public health, GP practice etc. This workshop looks to provide an overview of diabetes and how it affects the body,explore what information people with diabetes require in order to understand their condition and appropriate education strategies to provide this information,explore what is best practice care for people with diabetes and present examples,review current practices across the area, review the use of tools and practices in promoting best practice care, discuss strategies for evaluation of care planning, challenges of nursing those who are elderly and who have diabetes, complications and diabetic emergencies.
